Alex is an Iowa trial and appellate lawyer with a practice centered on complex civil litigation. Since his admission to the Iowa Bar in 2004, Alex has developed extensive experience in jury and non-jury cases across a broad spectrum of civil matters. His practice includes the representation of individuals, businesses, professionals, insurers, and closely held companies in litigation involving general liability, professional negligence, commercial torts, estate and probate disputes, personal injury, insurance-related litigation, and appellate advocacy.
In addition to his active trial practice, Alex maintains a significant administrative and regulatory presence, regularly appearing before professional licensing boards and other state administrative agencies. His work spans both defense and plaintiff-side litigation, and his representation of individuals and businesses has resulted in substantial verdicts and settlements totaling millions of dollars.
Over the course of his career, Alex has litigated matters in courts throughout Iowa, including appearances in nearly all 99 counties. He has successfully argued cases before the Iowa Supreme Court, the Iowa Court of Appeals, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, and numerous administrative tribunals. While his practice is intentionally broad, Alex has developed particular experience in estate and probate litigation, professional liability defense, insurance disputes, personal injury matters, and high-stakes business and civil litigation.
Alex earned his Juris Doctor from Drake University Law School in 2004 and his Bachelor of Arts from Loras College in 2001. He is a Fellow of the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers and the Iowa Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates, distinctions recognizing substantial experience and professionalism in trial advocacy. He has also served in numerous leadership and service roles within the Iowa State Bar Association, including involvement with its Jury Instructions Committee, Litigation Section Council and Annual Meeting Committee. Alex is a frequent speaker and presenter on topics related to trial practice, litigation strategy, probate litigation, and appellate advocacy.
Alex is a second-generation trial lawyer, following in the footsteps of his father, Rand Wonio. Alex and his wife, Tonya, have two children, Evelyn and Vincent. Beyond the practice of law, he has long been active as a youth coach and mentor within the community. Outside the office, they enjoy supporting their children’s many activities, traveling, and spending time with extended family and friends.
